Jan 31, 2025 - Spring Creek Communicator

Dear Spring Creek Families,
Happy Friday! It looks like the snow arrived just in time for the weekend. 🏂
📚Wednesday saw our families join staff and students in Family Literacy Day. It was a celebration of the joy of reading, writing, and learning together! Parents and children came together to explore the magic of literacy, sharing stories, creativity, and the excitement of discovery. Seeing families engage side by side, fostering a love of learning, was a powerful reminder that literacy is not just about words on a page—it’s about connection, curiosity, and a lifelong journey of growth.

⛹️ Thursday had our school host the school basketball tournament. Spring Creek Elementary, Myrtle Philip Elementary, Signal Hill Elementary, and Whistler Waldorf came together for a thrilling basketball tournament filled with teamwork, sportsmanship, and heart. Every play showcased passion and determination, proving that the true victory lies in friendships made and lessons learned.

UPCOMING CALENDAR ITEMS:

Families are reminded that next Wednesday, February 5th, is an early dismissal for Collaboration Day, with students released at 11:45 AM.

On February 14th, School District 48 will hold its annual Implementation Day, focusing on learning more about local Indigenous perspectives, language, and culture. We are grateful for the planning and support of both the St’át’y’emc and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Nations in planning this meaningful day. ♥️

UPCOMING SESSIONS:

Free Parent, Guardian and Caregiver Sessions on Substance Prevention, Part 2: Mental Health & Decision-Making Information Sessions: The Ministry of Education and Child Care, in partnership with adolescent clinical psychologist Dr. Hayley Watson from Open Parachute, will host three, free virtual sessions for parents, guardians and caregivers that will focus on practical skills you can teach your child and youth (ages 0-19) to prevent substance use and mental health needs. These sessions will build on a previous presentation, which focused on practical conversation tools for speaking about substance use prevention with your children/youth. The previous session is not a pre-requisite for this session.

Key takeaways for participants during this session:

  • Learn the factors that lead to substance use and mental health needs from a trauma-informed lens
  • Focus on prevention rather than intervention/response
  • Applies to parents, guardians and caregivers of all age groups (youth aged 0-5, 6-10, and 11-18)
  • Learn ways that these skills can be applied to yourself and the rest of your family to support the mental health of parents, guardians and caregivers

Participants must register in advance. Session dates are:

If you have any questions, please email the Mental Health and Substance Use team at [email protected]
